Statement:
"Negative Making" is a central theme of my work. I would define negative making as a reactive, ambient, and/or counterintuitive process. I use this methodology in my multimedia art practice, with a special focus in ceramics. Clay is not only a material, but a way of thinking. It is the lens with which I see the world. This way of thinking applies to both inside and outside the studio. One of the core philosophies of Clay is to minimize waste. I take this everywhere I go. My work consists of harnessing the background of my experience. There is so much material that can easily be overlooked. I hope to become more and more sensitive to the often ignored. -Frank May

“taste”
-an exhibition series by Frank May
"Good taste is the first refuge of the non-creative. It is the last-ditch stand of the artist." -Marshall McLuhan
The "taste" series comes from my misusing of Design Home (http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.crowdstar.covetHome). This game allows you to build virtual rooms with 3D models of all kinds of home decor. The decor that is used has an analog counterpart you can purchase in "real life."
There is also a rating element to the game. I felt it would be fun and a challenge to always attempt the worst rating possible. My task is to create aesthetic chaos in a virtual world, which is intended for harmony. I build rooms that clash.
I encourage anyone to bring a little intentional "bad taste" into their home. -Frank May
